All of us get stressed out. Work, relationships, circumstances and many other things can be the cause. Did you know that essential oils can help relieve feelings of stress?
Before we reach for an essential oil, however, we should examine how we are we treating ourselves — especially, how are we treating our guts?
Did you know that 60-85 percent of our immune system resides in our gastrointestinal track? Think about how we treat this part of our body, especially when we are stressed out! Also, there are the same amount or more of neurotransmitters in the gut as there are in the brain — substances such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and GABA. How can we expect to feel good and at peace when our digestive tract, also known as the second brain, is out of whack?
First, let’s take care of our digestive tract with things such as probiotics, enzymes, a cleanse every now and then, and quality supplements including vitamins and minerals, and omegas.
Then, let’s reach for those oils! Essential oils have a wonderful effect on our emotions. They act like messenger molecules (neurotransmitters, hormones, and peptides) to deliver correct messages to our cells. Peptides, which have also been called “molecules of emotion,” make up most of the messenger molecules in our bodies and greatly affect our moods.
Below are some examples of essential oils and the way they can affect our moods and feelings. I have listed a stressful emotion or feeling and the oil or oils that can help bring relief.
